Acting Mayor of Kutaisi City Municipality Davit Eremeishvili and UNICEF Representative in Georgia Ghassan Khalil signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The memorandum defines specific actions that need to be implemented in order to involve Kutaisi in the ‘Child friendly Cities Initiative’. Kutaisi has taken responsibility to join 3,000 cities from more than 40 countries and local governments, where the project is already being implemented with the support of the United Nations Children's Fund. "Today we have signed an important memorandum. It is a great honor for us and at the same time a great responsibility to join the ‘Child friendly Cities Initiative’. The Memorandum of Understanding which was signed between UNICEF and Kutaisi City Municipality sets out the path and action plan for our city to become part of the UNICEF Child Friendly Cities Initiative. According to this Memorandum, we take responsibility to protect the principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. There has already been formed a new Department at Kutaisi City Hall which works on children's issues. Every decision we make in the local self-government will be based on caring for children," said David Eremeishvili. The Child Friendly Cities Initiative supports municipal governments in implementing child rights at the local level, in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
